Would you have preferred this cover, to the one I actually used.
(I generated this using some old artwork I have using AI)
I asked on my patreon and subscribestar and those people liked the other cover (which I paid one of my artists for.)
So, would this have been better?
(Oh, so far book 2 is selling better than book 1 did.)

I prefer the original cover
ReplyDeleteI like the original cover too, to me the new sample is kind of generic since it doesn't tie into the story in book2 as much as the original does. Its a good coverthough.
ReplyDeleteI think using just one alternate cover is not a good benchmark. With AI it is easy to create a larger set of cover candidates to explore different ideas and pick the best one.
ReplyDeleteWhen asking this question it would also have been good to put them side-by-side here, now folks have search for the other cover you are asking about.
This image has the problem of being to busy with lots of background details. I haven't read the book yet, so I can't give pertinent advice related to the content. However, I would try to include some element that hints at the supernatural side of things (inferred from the mentioning of werewolf). You might also want to experiment with bokeh or shallow depth of field to focus more on the girl. I would also try a semi-real style in some alternatives.
I gave ChatGPT a try and, they just released their new Images 2.0 model and it is really impressive. I gave it the genre and the blurp and funnily enough it came up with a very similar cover idea. Here are the generated covers, https://we.tl/t-xYYRwM4mhQkDCqaA (only works for 3 days). It is really easy to iterate on the cover and ask for advice in the chat. If you want to do followup covers you can give it your first as reference for the style and character.
That's the book 1 cover.
DeleteSorry, for the mix up. Yet the other points remain valid.
DeleteYes, it is a good point.
DeleteIf I didn't know you were a good auther and I saw this or a similar cover on amazon i would properly skip it. It feals kind-of unprofesional to me. I know not all authers can afford a cover artist espcialy when starting out but if you used an ai image i would read it as you not being confidat in your book, which is sad.
ReplyDeleteHaving read the book it's a bit of a joke but the original cover actually have a large part in the story not just the book.
But hey that's just my 2 cents, take 'em or leave 'em, that's up to you.
I appreciate all the comments. I don't like AI covers much myself and I'm not a fan of the ones that are nothing more than a babe posing. But I've seen a lot of those out there so I figured I'd do a little research and ask around.
