Just finished and its a nice kick off to the second story arc. Was a little worried that we might see 3+ books of Sean taking care of Vegas, but it wrapped up nicely in just one and introduced the larger issues well.

I did like that the government was mostly aware of whats going on, too many UF authors just have them off staring at the wall picking their noses and completely oblivious to the activities and big explosions.
One thing I did find odd about the last bit with the Secret Service director though. Why would they even be the agency monitoring supernaturals in the first place? They are responsible for presidential security and related investigations and crimes related to currency such as counterfeiting. Shouldnt monitoring/investigating supernatural races and activity in the USA fall more in line with either the NSA or Homeland Security? Yes I know USSS is now part of Homeland, but their mandate hasnt changed. FBI would not make sense either as theres no criminal investigation or law enforcement angle as things are explained, just intelligence gathering and monitoring.
I thought about this long and hard. Originally I was thinking of the FBI or the US Marshals. The Marshals would have been a stretch, so I dropped them out. The NSA is a recent invention, it's only been around a couple of decades at best (and was actually disbanded at one point because of abuses of it's charter). But the SS was the government's first domestic intelligence and counterintelligence agency. As well as dealing with all sorts of financial crimes. So I figured that they got it first and in the government's desire to keep this as secret as possible, they held onto the job as the government grew. The government has known about mages since the beginning.
Oh, also to mention, the government has kept the number of people in the government who know about it to a very small group of people. Less than a hundred.
Ahhh, that makes a whole lot of sense actually. I was only looking at it from the perspective of who does what now, not who did what back when the government first started monitoring. Thanks for the response.
Have to save love the new book and agreed the government angle was a nice touch and maybe something that was even over due.
You know there is a question Joseph hasn't asked that should have occurred to him by this point. Has any mage/anyone ever captured and enslaved a lion-were?
Okay love the series don't know how far you are taking it but hope to enjoy the trip. Now off the wall (I get weird thoughts that bug me trying to figure them out)So Sean is giving Roberta a human child, Cali a dark elf child, Daelyn will have Dwarven kids.Jolene will have lion twin cubs I presume they will be human til they are old enough to understand shapeshifting (or the 2 old souls join the bodies) or until weaned and what of roxy
